In a joint event, the two fellows, author Galit Dahan Carlibach and director and author Shachar Magen, will present earlier works. Both are united by their examination of the present and the past and their literary expansion through magic and fantasy.
In the short story LINBER, author Galit Dahan Carlibach deals with the themes of fiction versus reality, fantasy as a force present in reality and the big question of the power of writing as magic in itself. A young woman travels to Berlin with her German lover, where the dark past of her family catches up with her.
LINBER was published in 2015 by S. Fischer Verlag in ‘Wir werden nicht vergessen, wir werden tanzen gehen. Israelische und deutsche Autor*innen schreiben über das andere Land’ (‘we don't forget, we go dancing. Israeli and German authors write about the other country’), a collection of stories by contemporary Israeli and German authors.
The stories deal with the question of how the third generation of Israelis and Germans meet fifty years after the establishment of diplomatic relations. ‘Politics, literature, party - how does the third generation experience this against the backdrop of history? The stories collected here from both countries tell this story,’ write the editors Norbert Kron and Amichai Shalev about the collection of texts.
FILM SCREENING POSSESSIONS
Shachar Magen developed the mini-series POSSESSIONS, a mystery thriller for which he co-wrote the screenplay with Valerie Zanetti. In the event the first episode of the six-part series will be presented. For Shachar Magen, writing about magic and fantasy is a way of “asking questions about faith.” In the Israeli-French series POSSESSIONS, the young French woman Nathalie is confronted with a serious accusation on the eve of her wedding: She is alleged to have killed her future husband.
The mini-series has six one-hour episodes and was broadcast on the American streaming platform HBO Max, among others. Produced by ‘YES’ in collaboration with the French broadcaster ‘CANAL PLUS’. The series won the award for ‘Best French Series’ at the ‘French Syndicate of Cinema Critics’ festival in 2020.
Shachar Magen writes about his approach to fantasy and magic: "For me writing about fantasy and magic is a way to ask questions about faith. I think it is more interesting to live with this possibility than without it. I do not need the characters to see too much to make them believe. And I think the same is true for the viewer and readers, they will choose to believe in the fantasy option if it will be the most beautiful and complete story. That's why I use fantasy like salt. I don't have to show much. Maybe it's because I grew up in a place where fantasy is not something acceptable, and I think it allows for a slightly different tone. This arc, starting out in the most realistic place, gray and grounded, and making its way to a world of wonder, color and imagination, is the arc I wish to complete in my tv shows and books".
synopsis:
During a wedding between Eran and Natalie, a new immigrant from France to Israel, Eran is found stabbed while the knife is in the hands of his new bride, Natalie. Karim, an official from the French consulate, who is called to help the accused and her family, finds himself obsessively tied to the case. At the same time, Natalie claims to Esti and Rafi, the Israeli police investigators who are appointed to investigate the case, that she is innocent even though she does not remember the moment itself; Although at first the solution to the case seems clear and there is only one culprit who holds the murder weapon in front of dozens of people, as the investigation progresses, the number of suspects keeps piling up, and above all the question marks surrounding the case, hovers an old family story about possessions and weddings.
