Lloyd Corporation & Anne Huffschmid
Conflicted Landscapes
In English language
Join us for a conversation between cultural scientist and researcher Anne Huffschmid, and artists Lloyd Corporation (Ali Eisa & Sebastian Lloyd Rees).
Through audio-visual research, writing and art practice, Huffschmid and Lloyd Corporation will share their approaches to conceiving and constructing landscape narratives of conflict, political violence and contested urban space.
Highlighting work conducted across Latin America, Berlin, Athens and London, the conversation will put forward a translocal dialogue—seeing how these spaces and contexts might relate beyond geolocation to open up new questions and narratives.
How do we construct landscape narratives of conflicted space and political violence through material, visual and spatial practice? How might we see landscape as an expanded field that critically explores notions of space and territory? What is a ‘forensic landscape’ and how can this perspective make visible forms of political violence, conflict, memory and resistance to power? What possibilities emerge from treating materials as traces, evidence, remains? Could a forensic perspective on the everyday reveal and produce new narratives about social and political conflicts with a different scale or sensibility?
The project "Art in a Conflicted World" is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
Speakers:
Anne Huffschmid is a cultural scientist and audiovisual researcher, author and curator. She lives in Berlin and has been working, for several decades by now, on topics such as urban culture, violence and social memory, discourse politics and visual cultures, with a particular focus on Latin America, especially Mexico. She operates a transdisciplinary notion of research, including and combining ethnographic and analytical as well as audiovisual, curatorial and artistic practices. Her PhD explored the Mexican Zapatista uprising as transnational discourse insurgence. In her long-term research “Memory in the Megacity” she explored memory stagings related to political violence in Buenos Aires and Mexico City. Her latest project on forensic landscapes and resistance, which she initiated in 2013, deals with emerging and vernacular (counter-)forensic agencies in Mexico and other Latin American countries. Both the feature film "Persistencia" (2019) as the interactive webdocumentary "Forensic Landscapes" (2020) are a direct outcome of this research. works were nominated and also awarded in international film festivals, such as FINNOF in Rosario/Argentina (best webdocumentary), DocsMX in Mexico (best documentary) and IDFA Amsterdam (international competition Digital Storytelling). Anne is also founding member of the Berlin-based urban art and research collective metrozones. http://www.annehuffschmid.de/
Lloyd Corporation is a collaborative project between artists Ali Eisa (b.1987, UK) and Sebastian Lloyd Rees (b.1986, NOR). Working together since 2010 their practice utilizes sculpture, installation, performance and participation, often taking inspiration from informal and local economies. Lloyd Corporation’s work takes shape through site-specific research and the collection of material culture, exploring the values, contradictions and material effects of capitalism on the urban landscape. Their practice also involves participatory works, exploring these issues and processes in dialogue with audiences and communities. These different making processes all aim towards a common ambition: rendering complex, abstract socio-economic issues - such as globalisation and urban development - visible, located and connected to our everyday lives. Selected exhibitions and projects include; Person to Person, Carlos/Ishikawa (2020), Local to Global, Carlos/Ishikawa (2018), For Some Future Time, South London Gallery (2018), Bankrupt. Bulk Buy. Liquidation. Repossession, Frieze Live, London (2017), Driftwood, or how we surfaced through currents, Fondazione Prada, Athens (2017), Developing Landscapes, Pump House Gallery (2016), Mirror City, Hayward Gallery (2014). https://www.carlosishikawa.com/artists/lloydcorporation/
